Password Protected Directories
Discover how to set up a protected and user-only area in your web site with password-protected directories.
A password-protected directory or area is a folder that may be accessed only when a username and a password are entered, so no unauthorized individuals could observe its content. This feature may be used for the main folder of a certain website or exclusively for a specific subfolder based upon your needs. As an illustration, when you are creating a new website and you don't want people to see it prior to it being completely ready, you might want to prohibit the access to it completely, whereas if you would like only some people to be able to access specific files, you can password-protect only a specific folder, while the other parts of the website may be seen by everybody. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear if the login details the visitor inputs are not correct. Even a direct link to a file shall not work given that any folder above it is password-protected.
Password Protected Directories in Cloud Hosting
Creating a password-protected area will take no more than a couple of mouse clicks and a few seconds if you host your Internet sites in a cloud hosting account with us. You will not need to do anything complicated - you'll need to select a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it must be secured, and then to input the login name and password that will be used to access that folder. When a number of people need their own login details, there will not be a problem to create a variety of different usernames with access to the very same folder. All secured folders shall appear with a padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this function is active. If you would like to disable the protection feature for any folder, you can disable it from the same section of the CP in which you have enabled it.
